The Spanninga Elips light has been out best selling rear light since we introduced it. It is an original Philips design and is now being produced the the great Spanninga. The light produced is wide and bright and the build quality is excellent. The only downside is the 80mm bolt spacing does not fit all pannier racks (e.g some Tubus racks only accept 50mm lights).

I recently got a Nitto rack, which has a 50mm light bracket, so I thought I would show you how you can modify the Elips to fit. It is very easy and all you need is a drill and a 5mm drill bit.

you can see on the back of the light where you will need to drill.

After removing the back, we can see that Spanninga added the necessary anti-rotation guides. This means we can successfully modify the light to 50mm.

You need to remove the bolts, which might need a tap with a hammer as they can be quite tight. Once out, set aside. I used a 2mm drill bit to drill a guide hole, followed by the 5mm. Check the bolts fit properly into the guides, as you do not want them to rotate when tightening the light to your rack.

There you go. Fitted to a 50mm spaced Nitto rack. Nice and easy solution, and no more than a 3-4 minute job.
